Burgas Airport celebrates 95 years since its foundation

  • News

The airport, nicknamed “The Sunniest Airport on the Black Sea” and for a year “The Airport of Roses”, continues to be the second busiest airport in Bulgaria.

Burgas Airport, part of Fraport Twin Star, celebrates its 95th anniversary today! It was on 27 June 1927 that the construction of the airport was started by the then French company SIDNA, whose direct successor is the current AIR France, and in 1941 it was finally ceded to the Bulgarian state.

Burgas Airport is a landmark for Bulgarian aviation. On June 29, 1947 the Sofia – Burgas line was launched, carried out for the first time by the Bulgarian passenger aircraft Junkers Ju 52/3m, and it became the first line of the Bulgarian air lines of the then Directorate of Air Communications.

Burgas Airport is unique for another curious fact. It boasts the highest number of sunny days in Europe, which earns it the nickname “The Sunniest Airport on the Black Sea”. It has the fourth longest runway in the Balkans (3200 m) and is an important transport hub in South East Europe with its many passenger and cargo flights.

On 10 November 2006, Burgas Airport, together with Varna Airport, was granted a 35-year concession to the German-Bulgarian company Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD, and the concession includes investments worth a total of EUR 403 million, which are still on track, including measures aimed at ESG (environmental, social and governance) solutions.

Undoubtedly, the most successful year in terms of passenger numbers was 2018, when the airport served a total of 3 255 568 passengers, and to date there has been an active pace of recovery in passenger traffic and aircraft movements after the pandemic that hit air traffic hard in recent years.

To date, the hard work continues on the opening of more direct international routes, with 77 destinations in 26 countries to be reached from Burgas Airport by 2022, and the recently reopened summer base of Wizz Air with an aircraft that will serve most of the 16 attractive European destinations.

On the occasion of the birthday, the BAIA team wishes everyone associated with Burgas Airport good health, happiness and strength to continue to build and develop successfully the native aviation. We are with you!
