We would like to remind you that the inaugural flight on the Sofia – Skopje route took place on 11 February. Official delegations of Bulgaria and Macedonia were on board the plane.

The international air line of TABSO on the route Sofia – Skopje was opened on 25 April 1965. At 08:00 the first plane IL-14 took off from Sofia airport and after 51 minutes landed at Skopje airport. The passengers were greeted by dignitaries, headed by the Republican Secretary for Transport and Communications Georgi Ruskovski, journalists and many citizens. The first flight on the new line was performed by a crew consisting of: commander Vladimir Vladov, co-pilot – Hristo Kostadinov, radio operator – Peter Kunov, mechanic – Lazar Tashkov and flight attendants – Maria Ivanova and Lyubka Stoilova. The flights from Sofia to Skopje are performed on Sundays.

Years later, after Bulgaria officially recognized the Republic of Macedonia on January 15, 1992, in March of the same year, the Minister of Transport Alexander Alexandrov agreed with the Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Macedonia Alexander Lepavtsov that the Sofia-Tirana air route, opened a year earlier, should have a direct landing in Skopje. On 6 May 1992, the Minister of Transport, Alexander Alexandrov, officially opened the line in Sofia. On 6 May 1992, the first flight from Skopje was operated by the Macedonian Minister of Transport and Communications, Alexander Lepavtsov.

On the evening of 21 May 1992, a flight of the state-owned airline Hemus Air was operated on the newly opened Sofia-Skopje regular route. 25 passengers travelled in a Yak-40 aircraft, and the flight lasted about 20 minutes. Flights from Sofia to Skopje are operated on Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning, and in the opposite direction on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. A one-way ticket costs $60 and a round-trip ticket costs $90. The airline Pal Air also operates flights to Sofia also with Yak-40 aircraft.

On 14 December 2007, the Minister of Transport Petar Mutafchiev inaugurated the Sofia-Skopje route, which is operated by Bulgaria Air. In his welcoming speech, Mutafchiev pointed out that the opening of the airline was aimed at normalising air connections between Bulgaria and all European capitals. At the airport in Skopje, they were welcomed by Mile Janakieski – Minister of Transport and Communications of our south-western neighbour, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Skender Paloshi, and Bulgaria’s Ambassador to Macedonia Miho Mihov. The Sofia – Skopje line is covered three times a week and there is a very good connection in Sofia to destinations in other European capitals. The ticket price on the Sofia-Skopje line in one direction is 39 euros. The flights were discontinued by the carrier in 2009.
