On 15 August, 10 tons of humanitarian aid from the UK arrived at Sofia airport for refugees from Ukraine – under the “Hands Across the Sky” project, “BNT” reported.
The assistance is the first stage of a project initiated by six-year-old Madison Manny-Baker and her father Mark Baker, and partners in the venture are the Bulgarian Red Cross and the Bulgarian Aviation Industry Association. Father and daughter landed in Sofia in the late afternoon to personally deliver the collected aid. The first humanitarian flight was operated by a Bulgarian airline.
Locally, Hands Across the Sky is represented by the President of the Bulgarian Aviation Industry Association, Todor Ivandjikov, and by Lydia Martin, Director of Humanitarian Aid.
The assistance is mainly in the form of baby supplies such as diapers, car seats, etc. Part of the aid will be distributed to Bulgaria and the rest will be transported to Ukraine.
Mark Baker pointed out that one of the goals is to help our country in caring for Ukrainian refugees. He stated that children are the future of tomorrow’s world and added that they need to be seen and heard by adults.
The idea of the project is also to help the countries that are close to Ukraine, because they are the ones absorbing the main refugee influx. The organisation is considering more humanitarian flights to hotspots around the world to help children.
